Winged relies on people’s curiosity to reveal itself.

Commissioned by Westbank to create a kinetic sculpture using one of their brand elements, we took the iconic wings shape from their logo and turned it into an interactive art piece that responds to the movements of people who approach it.

The idea was to build something that appears very simple, yet also mysterious from afar. The piece would draw people in to investigate and the payoff would be a mesmerizing visual display that guests would eventually discover they could control.

The final installation achieves exactly that. The sculpture consists of a 6' x 6' x 2' metal box with a frosted-glass front and a pair of parallel mirrors, one of which swivels. When a person approaches the box to take a closer look, they can only make out a mysterious glowing, neon-pink shape inside. The closer they get, however, the frosted glass changes unexpectedly to clear, revealing the shape of bright neon wings inside. The swivelling mirror moves gently in response to the motions of the viewer, using the visual effect of an infinity mirror to create a seemingly never-ending pattern of wings.
