/creating a collaborative animation
//story

Anima takes the simplicity of cell animation and gives it a modern, collaborative twist. The installation was originally built for Blend Fest, an annual animation festival in Vancouver. Throughout the festival, animators attending the event came by and drew on a Cintiq tablet frame-by-frame. As the participants put the stylus down on the tablet to draw, you could actually see the laser going straight to the wall, displaying what they were creating as they moved the stylus around on the screen.
Haze was added to the space to be able to visualize the laser as it traveled from the machine to the wall. Each frame drawn was collected into a collaborative animation that looped on the wall, displaying the style and wit of dozens upon dozens of animators in attendance.

//how it works

To create Anima, we wrote a custom animation application in Cinder and ran the application on a Cintiq tablet. The Cintiq then animates the strokes that people are drawing. At the same time, it controls the laser in real time, displaying what is being drawn with the stylus.
