/exciting finale spectacle for Arcade Fire
//story

For Arcade Fire's 2011 Coachella performance, Chris Milk came up with a visual stunt that would create an electric atmosphere at the festival. The idea was to orchestrate a light show from within 1200 beach balls that would rain down into the crowd of 80,000 people during the band's encore performance.
To make this happen, we designed a custom inflatable Zygote ball (much smaller than our standard 7'-balls) that could hold a controllable PixMob LED pixel. At a perfectly timed moment, all of the balls were hoisted by a crane and launched into the audience. Matching the pace and energy of the song “Wake Up”, the PixMob Zygotes lit up and changed colour as they bounced above fans’ heads. For the festival audience, and those watching the live streaming video feed at home, the visual experience was an unforgettable event.

//how it works

Thanks to the Creators Project, fans who were lucky enough to grab a ball got to take it home. The “Summer Into Dust” website encouraged festival goers to share their experience online and included technical information on the PixMob Zygotes.
