Generative Branding for Richmond Olympic Oval

The Olympic Oval in Richmond, BC is a premier sports venue built for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games.

Tangible was asked to create its new brand identity. Rather than take the traditional print approach, we created a generative, real time animation based on the ritual ribbon cutting ceremony when inaugurating a new venue.

During the opening ceremony, the animation was projected on a 24m square surface and included behaviours that could be triggered on cue, including forming the Olympic rings and cutting the digital ribbons, all shown on-screen.

High resolution images of the ribbon animations were also exported for use in print and online branding work.
After opening day, we installed a small rear projection screen system at the Oval that gave visitors the opportunity to play with the digital ribbons through gestural control.
