PixMob Zygotes for Arcade Fire

Topping off an incredible headline performance by Arcade Fire at the 2011 Coachella festival, 1200 beach ball sized LED orbs rained down on the 80,000 strong audience during the encore.

Conceived by Chris Milk, the visual stunt created an electric atmosphere as the balls came to life with an orchestrated light show from within. Called PixMob Zygotes, each Tangible Interaction designed ball shell contained a controllable PixMob LED pixel.

Matching the pace and energy of the encore song, “Wake Up”, the PixMob Zygotes lit up and changed colour as they bounced above fans’ heads. For the festival audience, and those watching the live streaming video feed at home, the visual experience was an unforgettable event.

Thanks to the Creators Project, fans who were lucky enough to grab a ball got to take it home. The “Summer Into Dust” website encouraged festival goers to share their experience online and included technical information on the PixMob Zygotes.
The spectacle generated a huge amount of coverage in the music and popular press as well as countless YouTube videos.
